Dual citizenship and New Zealand: what to check before you apply

Good news first: New Zealand lets you hold citizenship of more than one country. The catch is that your other country may not be so relaxed. Before you apply for New Zealand citizenship, it is worth understanding how dual citizenship works and checking the rules on the other side.
Does New Zealand allow dual citizenship?
Yes. New Zealand does not require you to give up your existing citizenship when you become a New Zealand citizen, and it does not stop New Zealand citizens from taking up another country's citizenship. So from New Zealand's point of view, becoming a citizen here does not put your original citizenship at risk.
The real question is your other country
The complication comes from your country of origin. Countries fall roughly into three groups:
- Allow dual citizenship: you can become a New Zealand citizen and keep your original citizenship with no issue.
- Restrict it: dual citizenship is allowed only in certain cases, or you have to notify or get permission.
- Do not allow it: taking another citizenship can mean you automatically lose your original one, sometimes without any notice.
Because this is set by each country and changes over time, the only reliable step is to check with your origin country's government or embassy before you apply. New Zealand cannot tell you what another country will do with your citizenship.
Things to check before you apply
A short list that saves trouble later:
- Whether your origin country permits dual citizenship at all, and under what conditions.
- Whether you need to notify them or seek permission to take New Zealand citizenship.
- What happens to your existing passport, and whether you must enter and leave that country on it.
- Any tax implications of holding two citizenships, which can apply regardless of where you live.
- Military or national service obligations that some countries attach to their citizens.
- For children, how dual citizenship passes on, since rules for citizenship by descent differ by country.
Passports and travel
If you keep both citizenships you may end up with two passports. As a rule, you use your New Zealand passport to enter and leave New Zealand, and many countries expect you to enter and leave on their passport too. Travelling on the right document for each country avoids awkward questions at the border.
Why it matters now
The new New Zealand citizenship test arriving in late 2027 does not change any of this. Dual citizenship is about your origin country's law, not the test. But since applying for citizenship is the moment your status changes, it is the right time to confirm where you stand, ideally before you pay any fees.
